Jane Nowakowski, Soprano

Singing has been a part of Jane's life since childhood. She writes, "I've sung in choirs, as a cantor, as a member of church congregations, as a Girl Scout (around campfires, while hiking or traveling in buses), at Sacred Harp gatherings, with friends and on my own (around the house, in my car, anywhere that a song comes to mind)."

Jane has performed Beethoven's Missa solemnis with Robert Shaw, performed and recorded Poulenc's Gloria with Leonard Bernstein. She performed in the 13th century liturgical music-drama, Officium pastorum (The Shepherds at the Manger) and in the opera chorus for the June Opera Festival (Princeton) productions of The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni. Jane has participated with several hundred singers in the Potomac River Sacred Harp Sing. Singing with Alice Parker in her seminars, hymn and folksong sings has also been a musical highlight for her. Jane sees in Parker a model of joyful music-making.

Jane is a music librarian at Westminster Choir College, where she has worked for most of her career, except for a 3-year interlude in the library of the Eastman School of Music. She is a cantor at the Church of the Incarnation, in Ewing.

Jane says, "There are many kinds of music and many ways of participating in making music - for me, singing, especially with other people, is what satisfies me and gives me joy."
