Lily Chan - Soprano

A native of Taiwan, Lily Chan began her musical training at age 6 by studying piano and singing in the children’s choir. She began voice lessons in high school and was asked to perform solos with the choir, which won first place in high school choir festivals twice in the same year. Lily continued to be involved in choir ensembles through college and graduate school.

Lily came to the United States to pursue graduate degrees in vocal performance. Her first singing gig was as the soprano section leader in a Methodist church. When she became a Christian, her interest in sacred music emerged. Lily has performed major oratorios works ranging from the Baroque to Contemporary. Her favorite roles include Angel in Handel’s La Resurrezione (The Resurrection) and Sister Constance in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites.

Lily earned her master’s degree in vocal performance from Boston Conservatory at Berkeley and her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Ohio State University. Prior to relocating to New Jersey with her husband, Lily served as a full-time voice faculty member at Liberty University and as an adjunct vocal instructor at the University of Virginia, while maintaining a private voice studio at home. Her teaching experience allowed her to share vocal technique and literature with students from high school level to adult amateurs. Actively maintaining her own instrument, Lily now enjoys discussing vocal health and the basics of singing in workshops.

When not singing, Lily works as a proofreader and translator (from English to Mandarin Chinese) for Bible study materials and Christian books. She also enjoys crocheting, cooking, and hanging out with her two cats, Ella and Nigel. She currently attends St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Basking Ridge where she also serves in the vestry and the choir.
